Just five plus years after voters in the Commonwealth approved a legislative commission to draw congressional and legislative boundaries by a huge two to one margin, Virginia Democrats decided to ignore the voters’ expressed wishes.
Having seen GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin botch completely the 2025 election, by forcing the party to take his acolyte Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears as candidate, and by not building up the RPV organizational apparatus at all during his four years, we endured a disaster in ‘25, losing the gubernatorial vote by a record 15%, and losing 13 precious House Delegate seats.
Even the dreadful Democratic A.G. candidate Jay Jones, whose misbehavior is well chronicled, won by seven points, although probably a good portion of it were mailed ballots Dems churn out which consist of names tossed into the hopper.
The actual named persons don’t necessarily show up to vote, and somehow Dems win the mailed ballots by massive margins :80-18 in ‘24 (12% of vote); Trump won the Election Day vote 53-47 (50%) and Harris early voting by 55-45 (38%).
Those who thought new Governor CIA bureaucrat Abigail Spanberger was going to be able to pursue her announced agenda, live in a fantasy world.
Instead, Democratic legislative bosses such as House Speaker Don Scott of Portsmouth (served 8 years in federal prison) and Senate President Pro Tem Lillie Louise Lucas (also of Portsmouth, chair of powerful State Senate Finance Committee and ) tell Governors what to do.
Portsmouth is majority black and Lucas cleverly exploited how Youngkin mixed her up with State Senator Mamie Locke of Hampton, in a “you all look alike” moment.
Lucas crushed Youngkin’s foolish $2-5B proposal to build left wing billionaire Ted Leonsis a sports arena at Potomac Yards in Alexandria in 2024.
Lucas has the license to distribute cannabis in Portsmouth and her “Lucky Charms” pot candy bars contain Delta THC-9, the addictive element of marijuana.
Scott Surovell, the Dem majority leader, a personal injury lawyer lacking the charm of his predecessor Richard Saslaw of Springfield. Surovell is an errand boy for Scott and Lucas, as the Northern VA Dems need a figurehead due to the powerful voting support they give Va. Democratic Party.
Surovell brags about both his Jewish forebears from Russian Empire on his father’s side, and his CSA roots on his mother’s side in his website. Figure that one out, please.
When Scott and Lucas forcefuly told the Governor they weren’t going to provide state transportation money to Fairfax County and other Northern VA jurisdictions, they threw a bone to Surovell by authorizing a casino in Tyson’s Corner, Fairfax’s business center.
Now, Fairfax’s left wing Board of Supervisors, which funds a bloated 40K public school bureaucracy, is angry about how affluent Dems near Tyson’s don’t want the casino, as it brings in undesirable elements with the revenue.
Scott, Lucas and Surovell are the phalanx of the redistricting referendum, as they are presuming Youngkin’s political incompetence last year was a signal Virginia had gone hard left.
That is why they have presented three referenda on restoring the voting rights of felons, expanding abortion protection until natural birth, and enshrining gay marriage, into the State Constitution, along with the Redistricting.
What helps we opponents of these dreadful referendum proposals is the bumbling Virginia Republican Party (“RPV”) will not get in our way this time.
As there is no money for GOP pols to collect on these proposals, they are MIA, and this battle will be fought by actual GOP voters and Dem voters and their mailed ballot allies, living or otherwise.
